Surface treatments for machined parts refer to many different methods including electronic plating coatings, chemical surface treatments, and some mechanical surface treatments, etc.
Surface treatments for machined parts enhance functionality, durability, corrosion resistance, and aesthetics.
The right choice depends on material, application, and environmental conditions.
Below are common surface treatment methods for machining precision parts for different kinds of materials:
1. Tool Steel Precision Machined Parts Surface Treatments
For common tool steel materials, for example, steel, carbon steel, HSS, PM Steel, or Carbide, there are different kinds of surface treatment for them.
- Carbon steel: Usually this kind material has a lower hardness and easily get rusty. So it may need a blackening surface treatment, or zinc plating, Nickel plating or Chrome plating.

- Common tool steel(including HSS): common tool steel has a medium hardness about 58~62 HRC. In order to enhance its durability and corrosion resistance, it usually have some PVD coatings, for example, Titanium Nitride (TiN), Titanium Carbonitride (TiCN), Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC), Aluminium Chromium Nitride (AlCrN). There are really many other this kinds if coating, they are TiC coating, AlCrTiN coating, TiALCN coating, CrCN coating, AlTiN coating, CrN coating, WC-C coating, TA-C coating, TiCTiN coating, etc.

- Tungsten carbide: For carbide material, itself has a very higher hardness around HRA 88~95. it usually has several specially coatings that can increase its use durability. These coatings are DLC, TA-C, WC-C.

2. Special Hydraulic Pressure and Mechanical Parts Surface Treatments
For some special hydraulic pressure and mechanical parts with threads, they may needs a hardened surface, but soft in the inner. There some times needs a nitriding, or nitro-carburizing, or called QPQ surface treatment.
3. Aluminum Machined Parts Surface Treatments
For Aluminum Alloy material, it usually has a kind of anodizing or hard anodizing surface treatment.

There are also some thermal & spray coatings and organic & polymer coatings. For example, PTFE (Teflon) Coating, powder coating and glass beads spray coating, etc.
Except for the above, there are also some mechanical surface treatments, for example: Burnishing, polishing, and lapping, etc. for some precision parts surface.
So there’s all about the surface treatments for machined parts. Hope our introduction is helpful for you.
