What are the differences between punch and die set and core and cavity set?

There are various kinds of precision mold parts. Many people heard the punch and die set, and some heard core and cavity set. What are the differences between them?

Punches and Dies Set and cores and cavities set both are precision mold components. But they belong to difference kinds of mold.

Punches and Dies Set belongs to the hardware/metal stamping punching Tools pressing dies. These kinds of tools need a cutting punch to punch on a die shoe. So the punch and die is set of precision parts used together.

Cores and cavities set belongs to the plastic injection/tooling mold. These kinds of mold usually used to produce plastic products in large bulk quantities. The core and cavity are designed with reference to the shape of the plastic product. They ensure proper cavity space same as the product shape once assembled together.

If there are some similar point between them, the punch and die set and core and cavity set both can be called the upper mold inserts and lower mold inserts.

The punch can be called as the upper mold inserts and the die can be called lower mold inserts in the stamping punching tools. The core can be called the lower mold and the cavity can be called the upper mold in the plastic injection mold.
